caddie
   The professional title of someone who carries a golf player’s clubs. The word is a diminutive form of ‘cadet’, used in its meaning of a junior who performs menial services while training. A golf caddie is addressed by title in Coldfinger, by Ian Fleming. In The Battle of the Villa Fiorita, by Rumer Godden, occurs the following conversation between an English girl known as Caddie and a girl of ItalianEnglish parentage called Pia: ‘“Caddie?” said Pia. “That is not a name. That is golf, for carrying the clubs.” “My name is Candida, after my grandmother.”’
